IP Softphones operate in much the same manner as an IP hardware phone. The major difference is you need a computer to install the IP Phone software and the computer needs to be running with the Softphone loaded all the time in order to make and receive calls.
The major benefit of a Softphone is cost savings as all of the Softphones listed below are free to download and install. They all work with most SIP systems (including RazorTEL) and are fairly easy to setup if you are familiar with how to install software on your own computer.
This will allow you to test your system prior to making any decision to purchase additonal IP Phone handsets later on. There are literally hundreds of free SIP Phone clients available it comes down to personal preference and compatibility. We don't necessarily recommend one version over another but have tested both the Xlite, 3CX and iSIP versions successfully.
